The Dacia Duster is a compact crossover SUV produced and marketed by the French manufacturer Renault and its Romanian subsidiary Dacia, since 2010. It is currently in its second generation, launched in 2017. Put the first and second generations next to each other, and today’s model is a more desirable-looking machine. Since appearing in the UK in 2013, Dacia built a reputation based on exceptional value for money.
The Duster is offered with two-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive. The 4×4 variants make use of Nissan’s all-wheel-drive system, which allows the driver to choose from three different driving modes: Auto where the rear-wheel-drive is engaged automatically in case the front wheels lose grip, Lock where 50% of the torque is consistently fed through the rear axle, and 2WD where the transmission is locked into front-wheel drive for max fuel efficiency.
The Dacia Duster range is split into three trim levels: Essential, Comfort and Prestige. There is a new 1.3-litre TCe petrol unit with either 130PS or 150PS available, and a 1.0-litre 100PS turbo three-cylinder Bi-Fuel engine, that can run on either petrol or LPG, delivering lower emissions, improved fuel consumption and an increase in range. The Duster diesel 4×2 will hit 62mph in 10.5 seconds or 12.1 seconds in the 4×4 model. The top speeds are 111mph and 108mph respectively.
Performance and drive
The light steering, offering 35% less effort than the first generation, makes it easy to move around town, while the raised driving position gives a clear view of the road ahead. All models look good with three-section LED daytime running lights, four-section rear lights, and a sculpted bonnet. They also come with 16-inch alloy wheels, satin chrome exterior body styling, rear tinted windows.
The Comfort and Prestige models are given more appeal with contrasting front and rear skid plates and alloy wheels. The Comfort adds sat nav, alloy wheels, cruise control and an onboard computer. The Prestige model has ‘diamond-cut’ 17-inch wheels’.
Interior
The Duster’s seats are comfortable, offering good support, extra padding and good adjustability. The cabin design includes ‘piano-style’ controls below the air vents, and good quality materials, including a leather steering wheel and a chrome gearknob. Electric rear windows and heated, power-adjustable door mirrors also feature.
Standard kit includes DAB radio, air-conditioning, 60:40 split rear seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, plus Bluetooth connectivity, auxiliary input and a USB connection for MP3 players. The Comfort trim adds a seven-inch colour touchscreen for the infotainment system, sat-nav, a reversing camera and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
